Senseo Coffee Machine Review

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

The Senseo coffee machine is revolutionizing the coffee world. It is a new style of coffee maker from Philips that will change the way we make our morning coffee. No longer will you have to stumble around in the dark half awake, fumbling abound with a looking for the filters and spilling coffee all over the counter all while attempting to make your morning coffee. The Senseo Brewing system makes perfect single serving coffee house style of coffee without any mess or fuss.

The Senseo is a incredible piece of technology instead of using big bulky filters and coffee grounds that machine uses neat little single serving coffee pods. As an additional bonus you get to choose how much is poured into each cup by selecting the cup size ranging from 3 to 10 ounces giving you the control of how much coffee you want. The pods are simply inserted in the machine and a perfect cup of coffee is poured every time.

The appliance is equipped with an 8-cup reservoir which means less filling and has a LCD display of how much water is left which eliminates the guesswork. There is also an adjustable spout that gives you the proper clearance for any size mug or cup. Without a large carafe and with the water reservoir being dishwasher safe the cleanup is a snap. The auto shut off feature is an enjoyable touch as well for those that tend to forget to shut off their machine.

The Senseo coffee machine has a very modern design both in appearance and function. With the pods make thing ten times easier, they even come if different flavored coffees like French Vanilla or Hazelnut. The machine can also make cappuccinos and tea. Toss in a no mess clean up and a gorgeous design and functionality (not mention it makes great coffee) the Senseo coffee truly is a ground-breaking machine.

Of Kopi Luwak and Peaberry – Gourmet Coffee

self cooking coffee

For centuries, from the trade ships of Columbus to those of Cheng Ho, the Chinese Merchant fleets, Gourmet Coffee have reigned the seas as one of the key merchant commodities most actively traded across the continents. You start to wonder what makes the Gourmet Brew so attractive that the coffee culture over the centuries and round the globe. It has become the epitome of coffee culture elegance and chic. Good food cannot do without a cup of gourmet brew, with some costing 65 dollars a cup. Now cost is any indication of the brew, that cup of kopi luwak is the most expensive and best tasting cup of gourmet coffee indeed.

How an Electric Coffee Maker Works

Basically, electric coffee makers work by using a heating element to heat the water in the reservoir. The hot water is siphoned up through a tube and then sprayed onto the coffee grounds. The hot water then hits the coffee grounds, and the coffee drips down into the pot, which is on a warming plate to keep it hot until you drink it.

Back to the Future With Stove Top Percolators

If you travel through Europe; Italy especially, then these are coffee makers you’ll find in most homes. The stove top percolator is a multi part pot that goes onto the stove to produce an excellent cup of coffee in the espresso style. You may even get the crema effect using one of these makers and all it takes is 5 – 10 minutes which is the same as a drip machine. There are more modern versions that use electricity but part of the charm of these coffee makers is their simplicity and the fact that there’s almost nothing to go wrong with it.

Just fill the bottom part of the percolator with cold water, the filter basket with coffee (generally with an espresso grind) and place on the stove. The hot water percolates up through the coffee grounds and collects it the top. When the makes starts to gurgle, take it off the heat and serve an excellent cup of coffee.

These coffee makers are cheap, easy to use and last a long time if taken care of. The down side is that they produce small amounts of coffee (a 6 cup machine will typically produce the equivalent of 3 -4 shots of espresso) and care needs to be taken when cleaning them.

The Future of Coffee Makers

Home coffee makers are so widespread in the west that nearly every household has at least one on the kitchen counter. Yet things started to change once coffee chains like Starbucks started opening on corners worldwide. Since coffee shops can make specialty coffee drinks that you probably wouldn’t make at home, many people started choosing not to make their cup of joe at home anymore.  Coffee chains opened all over the world, buoyed by the voracious appetites of coffee lovers willing to fork over four bucks for a cup of coffee.

There are ways to buy gourmet coffee, the most efficient of course is buying them online. But execute caution as to the authenticity of the sites and their services. Get word of mouth testimonials from fellow coffee drinkers. An authentic coffee club provides great samplers packages, overnight courier gourmet coffee service, members forum and tasters parties, and much more. And not to mention you can also get special member discounts for all your purchases

Importance Of A Coffee Machine

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

People around the world love coffee, whether it is the thick Turkish kind, espresso or light and frothy cappuccino. Purists will argue that it is totally unacceptable to drink just any type of coffee and that it must be made from freshly ground beans. Others simply are happy to lay their hands on a good cup of coffee they can get from the nearest coffee machine. Modern coffee machines are a far cry from the basic coffee pot or coffee percolator that our parents and grand parents used. It was days when coffee was made by putting a pot on an open flame burner with a cloth bag inside to hold the ground coffee beans.

For most people today a coffee machine is either a divine machine they have at home on a counter top or on an office desk that produces coffee basically on demand. Today the coffee machine that is used most is the mechanical drip coffee maker that can be placed on a desk or counter. This type of coffee machine usually has a glass carafe and a heated plate underneath the glass jug to keep the coffee warm.

The coffee machine has a water tank that is filled and once switched on the water flows through the basket that contains the filter holding the coffee grounds. The reason for its popularity is that the mechanical drip coffee machine is very easy to operate and you have fresh, hot coffee within minutes.

Coffee Makers To Suit All Needs

There are few places today where there is not a handy coffee maker to be found. They are available in all sizes from the home coffee machine to large machines for offices. Then you also get the industrial size coffee machine for canteens and coffee shops. Those who love espresso is not forgotten either. There is no need to go to a coffee shop if you want an espresso.

There are many different types of espresso coffee machines on the market that cater to home usage. Everyone may not like the single brand. Some will swear that only the top brands are good enough, but good machines do not have to cost a fortune. Getting hold of a good and reliable coffee machine is as far away as the nearest store or computer. There are few homes, businesses and offices that do not have a good and much used coffee machine. Everyone is extremely grateful for that on especially cold mornings.

Keurig Coffee Makers – Tremendous Variety of Flavors

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

The thing with single cup coffee machines, like Keurig Coffee Makers, is the indisputable fact that the “perfect one” for you can be tough to find. That particular problem has been solved by Keurig so you have no worries on that issue.

Keurig Coffee Makers will brew you a single cup of coffee in under a minute with just a simple push of the brew button. It doesn’t get any easier than selecting your favorite flavor of coffee, putting it in the brewing machine, and pressing the “brew” button..

Keurig Coffee Makers brew that single cup of coffee just like it’s supposed to taste even though they’ve obviously started getting a lot of competition in the single cup coffee market lately. For the other brands, that isn’t necessarily true. Imagine if you are in a rush and you still get that perfect cup of coffee. Just pop a Keurig K-Cup into the machine, put some toast or a bagel in the toaster and right after your savory cup of coffee is done, your toast or bagel should follow shortly. K-Cups are small containers that are filled with the actual coffee grounds and already have a filter built-in and are sealed with a foil lid. The hot water flows correctly through the kcup which gets punctured when it is placed in the Keurig Coffee Maker and brews your coffee quickly.

Each serving coffee that you make will take one K-Cup. You get the flavor you want, there’s no mess, and the brewing takes only about a minute.

We all like having a nice freshly brewed cup of coffee but don’t always want to go through the effort of making a full pot. The simplicity of a single serving coffee system is in its ease-of-use and the variety of flavors available. The single cup method is actually very cost-effective because you don’t end up wasting a half pot of coffee at the end of the day. One of the best features of this system is the variety of flavors of coffee available and the flexibility of getting the exact flavor that you want!

Fair Trade Coffee – What Is It All About?

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is an ardent supporter of the Fair Trade Movement and carry many Fair Trade Coffees under their label. The company also donates 5% of its annual gross profits to the Brewing A Better World Fund, which supports projects to improve the quality of life of coffee farmers. The fund also supports sustinable farming techniques locally and abroad in a mission to protect our resources.

You will see the Fair Trade Certified logo on a variety of products, including Green Mountain Coffee. Fair Trade is a grass roots movement, which supports small disadvantaged farmers and producers and sees that they get a fair price for their product. Coffee farmers can sell their beans for a higher price, receive help as they make a transition to more organic methods and they also have much needed credit made available. This helps stop big business from taking advantage of these small producers.

The Fair Trade logo can only be used by companies that are 100% committed to the principles of Fair Trade. When you see the logo on coffee or other products, it means that:

  • The marketing of the product is ethical
  • The product was grown on an organic or sustainable farm.
  • The farmers earn a fair wage to commensurate for their product.

TransFairUSA is the product certifying body for the United States. It certiifies coffee, food, wine and flowers. In time, they hope to include other products such as garments, cosmetics and diamonds.

Green Mountain Coffee carries several Fair Trade Certified Coffees, some of which are organic blends, as well. Most are available in KCups as well as bags of whole beans. There is quite a variety of flavors and roasts from which to select:

  • Green Mountain Mexican Blend
  • Rain Forest Blend
  • French Roast
  • Ethiopian Yirgacheffe
  • Green Mountain House Blend
  • Organic Sumatra
  • Wild Mountain Blueberry
  • Vanilla Cream
  • Peruvian Blend
  • Green Mountain Breakfast Blend
  • Newman’s Own Organic Blends

When you purchase a Fair Trade product, such as coffee, you should know that the following principles are being followed:

  • The farmer received a certain minimum fair price plus an additional premium for organic products.
  • There are fair labor conditions for farmers and workers.
  • Forced child labor is not allowed at any cost.
  • There is direct trade, eliminating unnecessary middlemen.
  • Fair Trade farmers and farm workers decide democratically how to invest Fair Trade revenues.
  • The farmers invest in social and business development to improve life in their communities.
  • Environmentally sustainable farming methods are used to protect both the environment and the farmers’ health.

So when you buy a Green Mountain Fair Trade Coffee, know that you are supporting these efforts while you get a great cup of coffee!

Tully Coffee – The Latest Acquisition From Green Mountain

Friday, September 11th, 2009

In March 2009, Tully’s Coffee sold its wholesale business and brand to Green Mountain Roasters. The Vermont based company is now busy expanding on the West Coast and is opening a new roasting center for Tully’s in the city of Sumner, Washington, in the Puget Sound region. Green Mountain Coffee has leased 200,000 square feet at White River, an industrial development owned by Investco Financial Corporation. Tully Coffee used to be situated in Seattle’s historic Rainier Brewery building. In the new site, the company plans to increase roasting, packaging and distribution. The new facility is bigger and more spacious than the Rainier brewery which Tully previously occupied.

Tully’s has opened 42 new stores and coffee shops in the last 12 months, with three in Singapore, for a total of 174.  Under the purchase agreement with Green Mountain, Tully’s will continue operations under its own name. Carl Pennington, who spent 30 years with Albertson’s was recently named CEO. When asked if the recession stalled the plans for expanding the business, he replied, “I’d be kidding you if I said the recession hasn’t affected us. It has. It’s affected our sales somewhat and we’re working to get that corrected. People are not coming in the second time like they usually do- a lot of people come in the morning and come back in the afternoon and we’ve lost some of that. It’s been kind of an up-and-down effect.”

Green Mountain has extended job offers to all 75 Tully’s wholesale employees, inviting them to join the operation at the new Sumner facility.  The company plans to build a staff of 125 employees at Sumner. Green Mountain’s CEO, Larry Blanford, said that its Keurig single cup brewers have now captured an 80% share of that rapidly growing segment of the coffee market. There are more and more of these brewers in homes and businesses and sales of the K Cups, the vacuum packed portions of coffee to use with the Keurig system, continues to increase.

Green Mountain sells over 200 different roasts and blends of coffee, tea and cocoa in K-Cups as well as whole bean coffee. The company has shown steady growth and in June 2009, announced third quarter sales of $190.5 million. This is a 61% year over year increase from $118.1 million. Earnings per share is pegged at 36 cents, this is more than double of last year’s earnings of 16 cents. The company’s explosive growth has caught the attention of stock analysts, who often list its shares among the top five to own. Experts predict Green Mountain’s aggressive growth will continue throughout 2009 and into 2010.

Finding the Right Coffee Maker

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

You would probably be hard pressed to find a home today that does not have a coffee maker. They are in practically every kitchen in America. Some are nothing more than stove top percolators and some are full-fledged coffee/espresso/cappuccino makers able to churn out a latte or a cup of coffee.

The coffee maker you decide on for your kitchen should be one that matches your coffee preferences and lifestyle. If all that you are concerned with is making a good cup of coffee, a simple coffee maker will suffice. However, if you are regularly making a morning trek to the local coffee shop for an espresso, then you might want to consider purchasing one for your kitchen.

There are many types of coffee makers to choose from, knowing what each one is will greatly help in making your purchase.

Drip Coffee Maker

The drip coffee maker is the one you see in most kitchens. The coffee is brewed by heating and then siphoning water from a reservoir. This water is then deposited slowly into a filter basket filled with grounds. The remaining coffee then drips through the filter into a decanter which sits on a heating element.

Today’s drip coffee makers can be found with a wide variety of options. The decanter is typically 8-12 cups in size and can be glass, ceramic, or even stainless steel. Your coffee maker can have a clock, an automatic timer to start brewing before you wake up, and can even have a built in grinder for the very freshest coffee. Many also have an auto-off option which turns the heating element off after a certain amount of time.

You can’t get more traditional in your approach to coffee brewing than by using a drip coffee maker. Introduced for home use in the 1970s, these machines work by letting water pass through coffee grounds held in a paper filter or plastic filter. The light-bodied, clear coffee then collects in a brew pot.

Single Cup Coffee Maker

These machines are among some of the newest on the market. Some are available that use regular ground coffee in a smaller filter basket yet only brew one cup at a time, while others use specialized coffee pods to brew individual cups as needed.

These coffee makers are great for people who don’t drink a lot of coffee or families that have only one coffee drinker. Another added benefit is that each person can brew their favorite coffee or flavor.

If you use the pod type brewers you will pay a premium price for the pods, making this coffee maker more expensive than other models.

Percolator

The stove top percolator may look like an antique to many people. For those who have used percolators they know that the coffee has a very different taste from drip coffee makers. This type coffee maker is very slow and often alters the natural taste of coffee.

Espresso Machine

The espresso machine is the ultimate in coffee makers. However, unless you purchase a combination espresso-coffee maker you will only be making espresso. Espresso machines are wonderful for making coffee based drinks and are very quick. If you like espresso occasionally and you are a coffee drinker to; you might want to consider a combination coffee-espresso machine.

Your coffee maker is what you want it to be based on your investment. If you are a ritualistic coffee drinker who has to have that morning cup of java to get going, spend a little more money and get a machine that is going to last and that does what you want it to do. If however you only have a coffee maker so that your guests can have coffee or you only occasionally have coffee yourself, there is no need for you to make a large investment.

Finally, a Viable Coffee Alternative that Really Works!

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

I'm sure by now you've seen the famous old time photo on T shirts with the guy literally vibrating and the saying "Coffee; Is the Planet shaking or is it just me?”

Granted that’s humorous. But the reason it’s funny, is because it’s true. We only really think things are funny when we can relate to them in some way and for us to really relate well there must be at least a little bit of truth to it.

Did you know, when polled, most coffee drinkers said they would like to try a coffee alternative if one existed that actually worked and that didn’t taste like recycled motor oil (Ok, I added the motor oil bit, but you get the point).

You know, we all have our own personal reasons why we want to get off coffee and I respect that, however I have compiled a few just to illustrate a couple of the reasons why I no longer drink the stuff.

The top ten reasons you should get on a good coffee alternative right now are
1.    You haven't blinked since the last lunar eclipse.
2.     You get a speeding ticket even when you're parked.
3.The nurse needs a scientific calculator to check your pulse.
4.You sleep with your eyes wide open.
5.    The only time you're standing still is during an earthquake.
6.    Your eyes stay open when you sneeze.
7.    You chew on other people’s fingernails.
8.    You’re so jittery that people use your hands to blend their margaritas.
9.    Your only source of nutrition comes from “Sweet & Low.”
10.    Charles Manson thinks you need to calm down.

We all know we really want to get off this addictive rollercoaster we call Java but what are the coffee alternatives out there? Is there really a coffee alternative that works?

Well, yes there is, it’s a South American herb called Yerba Mate that the natives of the regions of Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil have been drinking for Centuries.

It has the power to Invigorate the mind and energize the body without giving you the jitters the shakes or the dreaded Crash! And It can do all this while supplying you with one of the world's most potent antioxidants to help ensure you stay healthy and well.

There are two problems however:

1. Yerba Mate all by itself will not amount to much of a mainstream coffee alternative without a little help from some other herbs like Catuaba and Pata De Vaca. These serve to turbo charge it and really give you that ultra crisp sharpness that a North American connoisseur demands.

2. It has to still be Green and Unroasted or most of the nutritional and antioxidant benefits are destroyed. It must also be Organically grown because some of the pesticides they use in those countries have long since been banned from use in the USA. And of course if it's Organic then they aren't using any sprays at all.

So, does a viable alternative to coffee really exist? Sure it does and I drink it every day. You Just have to find a good blend of the herbs Yerba Mate, Catuaba and Pata De Vaca.

Once you find your perfect combination of these herbs your search for a viable coffee alternative that works will finally be over. And you will be a happy camper who doesn't have the jitters and no longer crashes just like me.

Manual Coffee Grinder

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

One of the key elements in preparing a good cup of coffee is through the use of a coffee grinder. This is due to the fact that the fundamental process in brewing a cup of coffee is the freshness of coffee.  Therefore, a coffee grinder is a critical part in the preparation of brewing this beverage.

This is due to the fact that once the coffee bean has been ground in preparation for brewing, it begins to lose its freshness and taste.  Generally, this breakdown in freshness and flavor begins following two days after being ground.  Subsequently, to maximize freshness and flavor is important to delay the grinding of the coffee bean if the individual wishes to maximize the taste of their coffee.

Therefore, if looking for a coffee grinder, it is important to know that there are a number of products on the market.  Specifically some of those products can be powered through electricity and some grinders are called manual coffee grinders.  Subsequently, if considering a manual coffee grinder it is important to know how this particular grinder works and features that may one may want to consider before purchasing.

What Is A Manual Coffee Grinder?

One of the grinders that an individual may wish to consider when thinking about grinding their whole coffee beans, is the purchase of a manual coffee grinder.  Specifically, a manual coffee grinder is an old time looking coffee grinder in which the whole beans are placed in a bowl that is affixed on the top of a small wooden cabinet. The whole coffee beans are grind with the help of grinding burrs of the bowl.

Once the whole beans are placed into the bowl then the handle that is attached to the top of the bowl is moved by hand in a circular fashion.  Subsequently, as the handle is turned the coffee beans are broken up and ground so that they are ready for brewing.

In addition, as the coffee is ground-up, it then filters down beneath the grinding bowl into a drawer which captures the grounded coffee.

Benefits of Using a Manual Coffee Grinder

When considering a manual coffee grinder, there are a number of benefits to consider.  Some of those benefits include the fact that this process can take considerable time when compared to the use of electric coffee maker with grinder or other electric coffee grinder..  Specifically the benefit to this is that the coffee drinking process is prolonged and therefore becomes more enjoyable because of the smells released and anticipation of brewing a fresh cup of coffee.

This type of coffee grinder can be taken anywhere and utilized because electricity is not necessary for it.It is best for camping trips or for a power outage area.
